How does the ARRA affect you?The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) was passed earlier this year and has several elements that can affect health care providers. Most significant among these is the emphasis on Electronic Healthcare Record (EHR) adoption. There are significant incentives for providers to adopt a qualifying EHR. Financial incentives can reach up to $64,000.00 per health care professional. Failure to implement such a system by 2015 can result in penalties to your practice. Call Summit Computing to discuss the affects of ARRA and what you can do to take advantage of the incentives. |

On August 19th 2009 legislation was passed that invoke additional requirements in the event of a HIPAA breach. The cost of a HIPAA breach can be disastrous for your practice. The new reporting requirements for a breach include notification of the federal government (HHS) as well as local media outlets. The monetary damage of a breach can likewise be disastrous. The majority of breaches occur when a computer system (especially laptops) are lost or stolen and you cannot show that the system contained no HIPAA protected data. Implementing encryption on your systems will greatly mitigate the risk of a HIPAA breach in the event of system loss. Let Summit Computing show you how this can be implemented easily, and at a surprisingly low cost considering the benefit. |

On October 30th 2009 the final interim rule was published regarding HIPAA breaches. Due to this new interim rule the penalties that can be associated with a HIPAA breach are increased. In the event of an unintentional breach the maximum penalty has increased from $25,000 to $250,000. With multiple breaches the civil penalties can increase to $1,500,000 in certain situations. Most HIPAA breaches are easy to prevent, and in the event of an intentional breach having protection measures in place can significantly reduce any fines levied on your organization. Let Summit Computing show you how to decrease your exposure to HIPAA breaches. |
